In the early 9th century, the first pilgrims walked to the site of relicis of St. James the Great in Galicia, Spain. A church, Camino de Santiago, was built in 1078 on the site and routes were developed. According to pilgrimage’s official history, the body of Saint James the Apostle is buried in the cathedral. James, son of Zebedee and brother of John the Evangelist, was discovered in a field in Galicia by a shepherd names Pelayo in the 9th century, during the reign of King Alfonso II.
